Bravery award

Om Prakash Yadav, aged 11, showed courage while saving 8 children from a burning van.
He received burn injuries on his face, back and arms, when he broke open the van door to pull out the children.  He won the 2012 Sanjay Chopra award.
You have to face your fears, fight with conviction , to be master over them.

Typical lunch comments at my office!

On a lighter note:
VEGETARIAN.
Ancient tribal slang for the village idiot who can't hunt, fish or ride.
(He he he! Suits me cause I cannot hunt, fish or ride ;) )

Drama with Eyes -Nangiar Kuttu

I had been to see the performance of this artist (Margi Usha ) at the Parasurama Temple in Thiruvallam , Kerala, recently
All the characters of the story will be enacted by one person to the accompaniment of the mizhavu played by the Nambiar's , the male members of a drummer sub-caste of temple dwellers and the kuzhithalam (cymbals) played by the Nangiar, the female members of this community.
As the name indicates, Nangiar koothu is performed by a woman of the Nambiar community.
With the founding of  the Ammanur Chachu Chakyar Smaraka Gurukulam (Training centre for kutiyattam) in 1982 in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, by Padmasree Ammanur Madhava Chakyar, the last of the outstanding kutiyattam guru like Parameshwar Chakyar and Mani Madhava Chakyar, the revival of Nangiar koothu as the only artform of women in Kerala was taken up, too.
.

Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple is a 2000 year old temple, which is based on the banks of River Karamana. This temple is the only temple in the world that is dedicated to Lord Parasurama, who is believed to be the mythological creator of Kerala. During the Karkidaka Vavu day, devotees pay homage to the departed souls of their forefathers. As part of the religious ritual, devotees pray after taking a dip in the holy water of this temple.

According to history, this temple was built during the 12th and 13th centuries. Managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board, this temple is a protected monument under the Archaeology Department of Kerala. Located about 9 km away from Kovalam Beach, this temple can be accessed by taxi or auto-rickshaw.

T(w)ogether!

Together in sunlight, rain and rust..
A couple retrospect in their twilight years...
Its not always roses;
But sometimes lichen and dust
That life offered;
But they stood undeterred
Through the tests of time...
They were together in sunlight, rain and rust..!
                                 -Spoorthy Murali

(PS: I made this painting from a reference painting and
would like to dedicate this little painting and the poem to my parents :) )

354_Marriage

Today's topic is Marriage.

"You know what getting married is? It's agreeing to taking this person who right now is at the top of his form, full of hopes and ideas, feeling good, looking good, wildly interested in you because you're the same way, and sticking by him while he slowly disintegrates. And he does the same for you. You're his responsibility now and he's yours. If no one else will take care of him, you will. If everyone else rejects you, he won't. What do you think love is? Going to bed all the time?"
~ Jane Smiley, novelist (b.1949)

"Marriage is a great institution, but I'm not ready for an institution."
~ Mae West

The Master Artist

Picasso, an old portrait i had done

Pablo

353_Pablo Picasso

Today's topic is Pablo Picasso.
Some brilliantly delicious quotes from the Master:

"My mother said to me, 'If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.' Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso."

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."

“There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun”

“Bad artists copy. Good artists steal.”

“It takes a very long time to become young.”

“If I paint a wild horse, you might not see the horse... but surely you will see the wildness!”

“To draw, you must close your eyes and sing”

“Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.”

“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

“The world doesn't make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?”

“The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web. ”

"I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it."

"Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working."

"For a long time I limited myself to one color – as a form of discipline."

"Paradise is to love many things with a passion."

"Because I cannot work except in solitude, it is necessary that I live my work and that is impossible except in solitude."

"I like all painting. I always look at the paintings – good or bad – in barbershops, furniture stores, provincial hotels... I'm like a drinker who needs wine. As long as it is wine, it doesn't matter which wine."

"Often while reading a book one feels that the author would have preferred to paint rather than write; one can sense the pleasure he derives from describing a landscape or a person, as if he were painting what he is saying, because deep in his heart he would have preferred to use brushes and colors."
